Sometimes life happens quickly. You get a new job in a new city, have a baby or welcome an aging parent into your home. Whatever the reason, you find yourself in a situation where you need to sell your home quickly to meet your changing life situation. There are people who can help, like the team at D&R Home Solutions, but the first challenge will be figuring out how to downsize your home and keep the most money in your wallet. A smooth transition is what everyone is looking for.
Assess Your Possessions
The first step is to take a good look at your possessions and your lifestyle. Many times, we have items that we hope to one day use but haven’t gotten around to it yet. For instance, consider the exercise equipment that sits around gathering dust and acting as an expensive clothes rack because one day you want to get back into shape. If you’re not using it, sell it or donate it. There will be items that you will question. If this is the case, store them for six months in a “time out” zone. If you haven’t used them in that time, let them go.
Go Through Closets, Drawers, and Storage Areas
Next, start cleaning out every closet and drawer. These are places where items get stashed “just in case.” Lighten your load and move on. The kitchen is another area where unnecessary items tend to lurk. If you have a cherry pitter but rarely eat cherries and never make cherry pie, let that piece of equipment go. It may be hard when you get started, but when you get into moving things out, you’ll feel lighter and less burdened by the extra items.
Head into any storage areas that you have. Here, there are plenty of items lurking that are not in use. There may be sentimental items, in which case you may decide how they can be a bigger part of your daily life. If there are family items that you are not deeply connected to, see if other family members can use them. The bottom line is that when you are downsizing, you need to keep the things that are useful and important to you and sell or donate the rest.
While you are going through closets, don’t forget the tricky spaces where unnecessary items tend to accumulate: drawers, bathrooms and closets. When you are going through these areas, you’ll probably find items that you forgot you owned or have expired. This is particularly true with pantry items and prescription drugs. Just get rid of them. If you have things that you think people might want, consider having a garage sale or posting in a local social media group. Otherwise, donate or sell them and reap the financial reward.
